Robins

Robins are not just for Christmas - they are cute and incredibly brave little birds. Despite all the carols and songs, a robin’s chest is actually bright orange and not red.

Here's some fun facts about robins:
  • Baby robins have brown and speckled chests, so they hide in bushes until they are older and can defend themselves.

  • Robins are not afraid of humans and will come close by if you’re eating outside or if you’re gardening just in case you disturb a worm or two!

  • Robins learn to know human faces and even their daily routines.

  • Male robins are beautiful singers and will wait until a city or town falls quiet at dusk or night fall before singing next to streetlights.

  • Robin's nest in secret places like thick, thorny bushes but they also like nesting in unexpected places, like old watering cans, garage corners, plant pots, or even old boots!

  • Robins are fierce fighters and very protective of their home. They will even attack anything red in case it’s another robin posing a threat.

  • A group of robins is called a flock.

How Your Family Can Help Robins

Robins love to eat off the ground or on low, flat surfaces so you can make a robin café with crushed peanuts, sunflower hearts, raisins or chopped apple on a low tray.

Like a lot of birds, robins will appreciate a shallow bowl of fresh water in the garden so they can have a drink and a wash.

Robins love to root around in a leaf pile so why not create a pile of fallen leaves on a patch of the garden.

Build or buy a robin house but remember they will need an open-fronted box rather than a box with a small round hole.
